Description

I Scream! – Porcelain Ice Cream Sculpture by Anna Barlow.

I Scream! is a playful yet refined porcelain sculpture depicting an upside-down, melting vanilla and strawberry ice cream cone.
Created by British ceramic artist Anna Barlow, this work transforms a familiar everyday indulgence into a striking collectible contemporary art object.

Masterfully sculpted and glazed, the piece captures the
fleeting, transitory nature of melting ice cream. Through a trompe l’oeil approach, the artist brings humour and irreverence to the work while maintaining a sense of delicate elegance and technical precision. The illusion of softness and movement contrasts beautifully with the permanence of ceramic, inviting both delight and contemplation.

Crafted from porcelain, earthenware clay, and glaze, this
sculpture showcases exceptional craftsmanship and surface detail. The glossy finish and carefully modelled drips enhance its lifelike quality, making it an eye-catching focal point in any space.

About The Designer

Anna Barlow is a ceramicist born in Bristol and currently living and working in London. She holds a BA (Hons) in Ceramics from Bath Spa University College and has exhibited her work in galleries internationally.

Her practice is rooted in a fascination with the way we eat food and the rituals that surround celebration, indulgence, and shared experience. She is particularly drawn to how food can quietly tell stories of people, place, and fleeting moments — a full stand of ice creams might suggest a hot summer’s day, communal joy, or treats mysteriously abandoned. These subtle narratives, often overlooked, form the starting point for her work.

Ice cream has become a central focus within her practice due to its transitory nature. Melting, oozing, and collapsing, it embodies a brief
yet memorable experience that many people instantly recognise.

Through clay, porcelain, and glaze, Barlow captures these temporary states and freezes them in time, transforming ephemerality into permanence. Her work aims to evoke memories of taste and sensation, while also prompting fantasies of indulgence and desire.

Material exploration sits at the heart of her process. Inspired first by the inherent qualities of clay and glaze, she combines surface, texture, and form to create a sense of “visual edibility,” leaving the
imagined taste of the work open to the viewer. Following an initial year of focused research into glaze, materials, and texture, she continues to explore new ways of capturing the fleeting beauty and transitory nature of food.
