Description
Description
Unexpected, tactile and unapologetically unconventional, the Crabs and Lobsters Mini Chair by Christian Astuguevieille is a collectible design object that challenges traditional ideas of furniture. Created in 2008 for an edition exclusive to CoutureLab, this sculptural piece transforms an everyday mini chair into an exuberant composition of soft-toy crustaceans in vivid shades of red and orange.
Layered crabs and lobsters form a richly textured, almost fantastical silhouette, with rounded shells, curling claws and articulated limbs creating a sense of movement and mischievous personality. The result is a striking fusion of sculpture, design and playful irreverence, characteristic of Astuguevieille’s unconventional approach to materials and form.
Neither ordinary furniture nor conventional sculpture, this mini chair occupies its own territory between function and fantasy. Its compact proportions make it a distinctive accent for an art-filled interior, a conversation-starting addition to a contemporary design collection, or an unusual acquisition for collectors drawn to avant-garde furniture and objects with a strong artistic identity.
For those who believe design should provoke curiosity rather than simply blend into its surroundings, Crabs and Lobsters Mini Chair embodies the spirit of Madnesses: collectible art and design without boundaries.
About The Designer
About The Designer
Christian Astuguevieille was a multifaceted French artist and designer whose distinctive practice spans sculpture, jewellery and furniture. Known for his eccentric, provocative creations, he challenges conventional boundaries between art, design and everyday objects through unexpected materials, unconventional forms and a distinctly imaginative sensibility.
A recurring theme in his work is the transformation of familiar objects into enigmatic, tactile creations. His celebrated furniture includes chairs, desks and benches wrapped and knotted with rope, while his mirrors, jewellery and sculptural objects explore unusual combinations of materials and forms. He also developed a fantastical universe of toys he called “monsters”, combining unexpected animal features and surreal details to create characters that are both playful and uncanny.
In Astuguevieille’s hands, the ordinary becomes extraordinary. His work invites viewers to reconsider the familiar, embracing experimentation, humour and the expressive potential of design. The Crabs and Lobsters Mini Chair captures this spirit in a sculptural object that is as much a conversation piece as it is a collectible design statement.
