About The Designer

British ceramic artist Julia Roxburgh is known for her vibrant, bold, and colourful creations inspired by the dynamic energy and the beauty found in theatre and the circus.

Roxburgh studied at Bristol Polytechnic in the early 80s, and following her studies, she moved to London and worked as a theatrical prop maker – “My love for the theatre and the circus found its way into whimsical pots once I decided that mud pies were my destiny.”

Influenced by the dramatic movements, flamboyant costumes, and whimsical characters that define the world of performance, her work brings these fantastical worlds to life in clay.

A true lover of storytelling, Julia Roxburgh takes inspiration from the drama and spectacle of the stage, infusing each piece with the same sense of excitement and energy, as well as from the craziness found in the circus ring. From harlequinesque figures in bold geometric shapes to vibrant colour palettes that seem to jump off the surface, her pieces evoke the joy and chaos of live performance. Eclectic, extravagant, surprising and always the centre of attention, minimalism has no space in this artist’s world.

Using traditional hand-building techniques alongside contemporary glazing and firing methods, Roxburgh transforms the humble medium of clay into a canvas for theatrical expression. Her bright, happy and unapologetic work explores themes of movement and transformation with a playful creative madness, often incorporating elements of costume design, volume and stagecraft to add texture and depth to each piece – “I use white earthenware clay and as many colours as I can get my hands on. Each piece I make is fired four times, the last firing being the gold. I like a bling-bling effect on a mud pie!”

Whether in the form of sculptural pieces or functional ceramics, her one-of-a-kind creations are an invitation to step into a world of imaginative spectacle and vibrant colour, where each piece tells a story, sparks emotion, and invites the viewer to see the world through the creative mind and beautiful madness of the artist’s own stage.
