Caramelito, meaning “little candy” - is a lamp shaped around a traditional upright oval form, altered by two awkwardly added side flaps that read like a graphic exaggeration of a stretched sweet. The core form is richly textured and visibly hand-built; combined with its bright pink glaze – a familiar cartoon skin-tone – the piece takes on a playful, bodily presence. It sits somewhere between confection and figure: a fleshy, cartoon-like candy.

Lucia Vera is a painter and sculptor whose work, particularly the pieces presented here, challenges and mocks visual languages that objectify women. Her formal language is rooted in bodily, organic forms, using exaggerated volumes and playful shifts in scale to amplify meaning and sharpen each work’s narrative.

A key body of work within her practice is a series of one-of-a-kind sculptural lamps, each topped with an oversized lampshade that functions as both costume and character. Each lamp tells a distinct story and often relates closely to figures and themes explored in her paintings. The lampshades are vintage pieces drawn from the artist’s private collection, introducing layers of domestic history and cultural reference. Across painting and sculpture, Vera’s work balances critique and play, using form, scale, and humor to create works that are both visually compelling and conceptually precise.
